Treating PTSD Among Refugees

Prof. Steve A. Johnson, PhD.

Columbia International University & Albert Ellis Institute, New York

pre-conference workshop

This workshop will focus on evidence-based treatments of PTSD, primarily from 2nd and 3rd wave behavioral models emphasizing REBT treatment. Integrated with REBT will be how to address the loss of meaning in life based on insights from Existential and Logotherapy. Consideration will be given to risk and preventative factors in developing PTSD and their consequences in treatment. Also, since some of the major treatments for PTSD are either exposure-based or present-centered, which have widely divergent but equally powerful treatment outcomes, discussion will cover how to integrate these two approaches. Considerable attention will be given to the role of culture in conceptualizing PTSD as well as treatment. Finally, both the conceptualization and treatment of PTSD based on the neurobiological consequences of trauma will be covered.
